About me...
Joan (Johnson) & I married the summer we graduated and went from SBC to Grace Seminary, along with Dr. & Jenny Sproule, Travis ("Honey") & Becky Barnes, Chuck ("Whaddayoumean?!!) & Eileen Rife, Len Martin, David Eason and others who followed later.
After graduating Grace we went to Salem Church (Rita Zimmerman/Erwin's home church in Illinois) first as Associate, then Senior Pastor, then to North Carolina as a Senior Pastor, did a stint in Aspen, Co., traveled the US for some time and finally home to Alabama for a visit that became permanent!
Along the way Joan & I had three children--all with the same first initial so when I get old and start stuttering "J, J, J....." someone better come!
Jason-Oldest-is a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer and is full time Firefighter/EMT/Hazmat Tech./Confined Space Rescue Tech., etc. in two Fire Departments and is a Deputy Sheriff. He manages to work with us regularly as well. (Yes, he does a much better job than his dad!!!!)
Jessica-Middle-graduated Auburn (War Eagle!) with BS in "Human Development & Family Services" (your guess is as good as mine as to what that is!), and Jacksonville with BSRN, has done a fine job "raising" her dad and younger brother!! Fortunately, she got her mother's good looks, personality and discipline! She works as a nurse on an Intensive Care Unit and recently got engaged!
Joel-Youngest-is Sr. at Auburn finishing up BS in Psychology and doing research with some of his profs. in Autism & other "stuff". He plans advanced degrees in Psyc. After growing up working with our companies he told me several years ago he didn't know what he wanted to do for sure but he knew it wouldn't involve manual labor! You go, Joel!
After being home for a while Mr. G called so I taught OT and NT at SBC (all the entering freshmen-were we that young when we went??!!) until Joan became sick with breast cancer and we ultimately lost her.
Since then (93) I've been Daddy & a business owner--a Construction Company & a Cleaning Company (ServiceMaster)-both geared toward Disaster Restoration, moonlighted as Construction Inspector/Expert Witness & Catastrophe Insurance Adjuster and kept my "free" time occupied as Firefighter/EMT, Deputy Sheriff and whenever possible SCUBA diving. (For inquiring minds: Yes, all the kids & I dive together and from time to time Jason & I partner and have been in fights together in law enforcement and been inside fully involved structure fires together--I TRUST my son! and it helps that the scrawny boy at SBC grew to a 290 lb "teddy bear"). I now work 4 days a week at the SO.
Kids are all grown now, still (more or less) live at home and we love it! The Lord has brought a wonderful lady (Lynn) into our lives and that works well for both families. As soon as the kids all get through schoolin' (and I can stop paying tuition bills!) I anticipate retiring from at least part of what I do!
The ministry that the Lord had for us to do wasn't nearly what I thought it would be but has none the less been profitable and HE has been faithful throughout! "He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose" is just as true now as it was when I first heard those words in missionary chapel at SBC.
Would love to hear from you all! Phil

Hey Phil, I'm doing very well. It's been a long time since we saw each other up there that fine day! Your profile shows you still lead a very busy life. I'm glad you have found Lynn to share your life with. I am still waiting on the Lord for someone to share my life with in Him. I stay busy working at an elementary school with a classroom as well as after school tutoring. I really enjoy the children. My last son and I are pretty involved at our church. We're very blessed with where we go, as it is centered on being a place of restoration and growth.
Glad to hear from you!!! God bless you richly, Phil.
Hey Phil. It is so good to hear from you. Yes things are going great here. We seem to have a group of administrators that really work well together and there is a sense of safeness (is that a word?) that let's all of the staff work well together. Your old SEBC is in very good hands. Pray for us and for donors of course that keep us going. (Scarey times.) Also please pray for alumni to take up the cause of supporting us (some do of course but we need more.)
Both my kids graduated from SEBC. Michelle works in Institutional Effectiveness (hmmmm...???) and my son David is in law school at Cumberland. For me it is same-o except I do have a 2 year old grandson names Eric who is the most wonderful child in the whole wide world!!!! It is so good to hear about your kids. You are so blessed to be so connected to your kids. Ultimately, that's the best part of our lives!!! Take care
The church we're at is not EMC. It's United Brethren in Christ. Who do you still keep up with from the Salem church? Mom's still living in Gridley at the house she & Dad moved into when they moved out of the children's home. Dad's been gone 25 years. Mom still keeps active at church & with friends. Sounds like you keep yourself busy!!!!! Take care!
Phil, it's good to hear from you. It's been a long time. We are empty nesters now. Our oldest son Wes, is married and has 1 daughter. He works at Indiana University. Tim (our middle son) is married and lives in Palatine, IL. Michael lives in Madison, WI. All 3 boys & our 2 daughters-in-law graduated from Indiana Unversity. John's been pastoring a small country church in Auburn, IN. He started there the end of 2000. I'm still working at a water softening company - been there since June of 1991. Sounds like you have enough going on to keep you busy!!!!! Take care.
I talked to John last night, and he does know Jason because John has worked at both Chelsea and Harpersville. Isn't that crazy? If you want to e-mail us, my e-mail address is jgbayse@prodigy.net.
Hi Phil, I work for Heninger Garrison Davis in Birmingham. I see that you (and your son?) have worked with the fire dept. My son John Futrell is full-time with the Anniston Fire Department. Great to hear you're doing well. I still remember those rides to church on Sunday mornings in the VW bug.
Hey Phil. I thought of you just the other day and don't remeber why...must of been a crime report on the news...just kidding. Hope you are doing ok. Stop by the college the next time you are down this way.

Left Vail in 2001, moved to DC, was in my first Ambassadors Prayer 9/11 (yep, blocks front Pentagon), accepted this Church 2003, in the 'burbs of NYC. Who'd a thunk it? Take a look, renaissancechurch.org
